The Calistoga wine region, at the northernmost, narrow end of Napa Valley, sits about 300 feet above sea level, although a few vineyards are appreciably higher. Its soils are among the rockiest in the valley, and its climate the warmest, although gentle breezes typically moderate afternoon temperatures, and the weather cools down dramatically at night, helping preserve healthy levels of acidity in the grapes.
The town of Calistoga was founded as a resort in the 1880s by a Gold Rush entrepreneur named Sam Brannan. It has long been renowned for its spas and hot spring resorts, which have attracted visitors from around the world for well over a century. Although Calistoga offers many modern amenities, including fine restaurant and inns, it retains an Old West feel and rustic charm distinguishing it from Napa Valley’s more tourist-oriented towns . |
